5- Ingredients Vegan Nutella
Is Homemade Nutella Healthy?
When it comes to the store-bought version of Nutella, the reality is that it’s not a healthy choice. Despite advertisements of roasted hazelnuts and whole milk, the primary ingredients are palm oil and refined sugar.
However, when you opt for the homemade version, crafted from pure hazelnuts and cocoa powder, sweetened with dates, and incorporating some extra plant based milk for that perfect texture, you’re in for a healthier and more genuine Nutella experience.
Whether you, like me, struggle with lactose intolerance or have to navigate the challenges of gluten intolerance, this homemade Nutella is a perfect fit. It’s a delightful solution for those with dietary restrictions as it’s both gluten and lactose-free, crafted from wholesome, natural ingredients. Homemade Nutella offers the deliciousness you crave without compromising on your health.
The beauty of this nutritious spread lies in its versatility and whole foods ingredients. You can use it in countless ways. Spread it generously on sandwiches for a nutty, chocolatey twist, or drizzle it over pancakes. It’s also perfect as a layer in your favourite cake recipes.
This recipe makes a generous batch of Nutella, but you can easily make a smaller portion by halving the ingredients. You can store this spread in an airtight container in the fridge, where it will stay fresh for a couple of weeks. Personally, I opt to prepare the full quantity because my monkeys empty it quickly.
Two Ways to Make Homemade Nutella: Nutty & Rich or Quick & Simple.
There are two ways to make homemade Nutella, depending on what equipment you have and what you’re looking for nutritionally. The first version requires a high-powered food processor to blend roasted hazelnuts into a smooth paste—I personally use a Megamix, which is really strong and gets the job done beautifully. It takes a bit more effort, but the result is a rich, creamy spread with a deep nutty flavor and balanced nutrients. The second version is much simpler and comes together quickly in a blender. It’s naturally sweet and chocolatey, though it lacks the healthy fats and protein you’d get from the nuts.
VERSION 1, Quick & Simple
INGREDIENTS
- ½ glass of dates (soft, pitted)~ 90g
- 5 tablespoons of plant-based milk (e.g. almond, rice, or soy)
- 3 tablespoons of cacao powder
- a pinch of salt
METHOD
Soak dates in warm water for 10 minutes if they’re dry, then drain.
Blend dates, plant-based milk, cacao, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
Adjust texture with more milk if needed.
Taste and tweak—add a date for sweetness or more cacao for richness.
Store in a jar in the fridge for up to a week.
VERSION 2, Nutty & Rich
requires a strong food processor
INGREDIENTS
- 200 grams of raw hazelnuts (roasted at 180°C for 15 minutes)
- 2 tablespoons of raw cacao powder
- 12 dates
- 220 ml of plant-based milk (e.g., soy, almond, rice)
- A pinch of salt
METHOD
- To start, roast your raw hazelnuts on parchment paper in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes until they become fragrant and slightly golden.
- Allow the roasted hazelnuts to cool down before moving on to the next steps.
- Soak the dates in hot water for 10 minutes to soften them.
- In a food processor, combine the roasted hazelnuts, raw cacao powder, soaked dates, and plant-based milk. Adjust texture with more milk if needed.
- Blend until you achieve a smooth, creamy texture.
- Lastly, add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavour, and adjust the salt to your taste preference.
Why I love this recipe?
- Vegan Delight: This hazelnut chocolate spread is a delightful vegan and dairy-free alternative to the classic Nutella.
- Naturally Sweetened: Dates provide sweetness along with natural fibre, making this spread a healthier choice.
- No Artificial Additives: Skip the palm oil and refined sugar, opting for a more wholesome and eco-friendly option.
- Nutrient-Packed Cocoa: Raw cacao powder is rich in antioxidants and a good source of magnesium and copper.
- Fibre and Flavour: Dates offer both sweetness and the goodness of natural fibre.
- Creamy Consistency: The addition of plant-based milk ensures a creamy and smooth texture for your homemade Nutella.
